New Bolete Species Discovered in Southwest China's Guizhou Province

Researchers describe Caloboletus luolongensis, adding to the diversity of the genus.

On October 26, 2026, scientists published a detailed account of a newly identified bolete fungus found in Guizhou Province, southwestern China. The study, appearing in MycoKeys volume 142 (pages 139‑155), names the species Caloboletus luolongensis sp. nov., and also provides supplementary observations on the known bolete Chenrenyua longispora. The research team—Xing Mo, Zhuo-Qiong Qi, Zhi-Qi Zhang, Rong Dai, Ya-Dong Li, Yun Pei, Jing-Wei Li, Ting-Chi Wen, Wan-Ping Zhang, Nian-Kai Zeng, Xiu-Hong Xu—used both morphological examination and multilocus phylogenetic analyses to establish the new taxon.1

The authors report that C. luolongensis is characterized by a rugose pileus with a slightly incurved margin; its stipe shows longitudinally reticulate structure and turns rose-red over its middle and lower parts. When bruised, the context turns blue. These macroscopic traits were confirmed through DNA sequencing of four loci: nrLSU, nrITS, TEF1‑α, and RPB2. Phylogenetic reconstructions performed on this combined dataset placed the new species as an independent lineage well separated from all previously described congeners.1

In addition to describing Caloboletus, the paper also revisits Chenrenyua longispora. Newly collected materials from Guizhou show intraspecific morphological differences compared with the original protologue, while molecular data confirm conspecificity. The supplementary notes help clarify variation within this known bolete across China’s southwestern region.1

This newly described species adds to the diversity of boletes in China, bringing the total number of recognized Caloboletus species to at least 20.

While the study focuses on taxonomy and phylogenetics rather than culinary use, its findings enrich broader understanding of bolete evolution and distribution. The MycoKeys article provides detailed photographs, measurements, and DNA sequence accession numbers for academic research.1
