New Wood-Decaying Fungi Found in Northwestern China

Two new Hyphoderma species were described from Qinghai forests, adding to the known diversity of lignocellulose decomposers.

Scientists Xin Li, Yujin Cui, Rui Xing, Yucheng Dai, Yuan Yuan, and Yingda Wu reported two new wood-inhabiting fungi from Qinghai province in northwestern China. The taxa belong to the genus Hyphoderma (Basidiomycota) and are named H. tenuicystidiatum and H. tabuliformis. 1.net]

The first species, H. tenuicystidiatum, is distinguished by light vinaceous‑gray fresh basidiomata with a smooth hymenophore. Its hyphal system is monomitic and features clamp connections on generative hyphae. Cylindrical cystidia and fusoid cystidioles appear under the microscope; its basidiospores measure 10.4–14.9 × 5.2–7.1 µm. 1.net]

In contrast, H. tabuliformis shows white to cream fresh basidiomata with an arachnoid hymenophore. Generative hyphae are encrusted; clavate cystidia occur, and subcylindrical basidiospores range from 8.7–12.2 × 3.6–4.2 µm. These morphological differences were confirmed through molecular phylogenetic analyses of ribosomal DNA sequences. 1.net]

Beyond taxonomy, the discovery highlights how wood-decaying fungi contribute to carbon release and nutrient turnover in forest ecosystems. By breaking down lignocellulose, these species help recycle organic matter and maintain soil health, underscoring their ecological importance. 1.net]

The findings also expand our understanding of fungal biodiversity in Chinese forests, where over a hundred Hyphoderma species have already been recorded worldwide. The new taxa add depth to this genus’s diversity profile and may inform future studies on biotechnological applications such as biofuel production or bioremediation.
