New Inocybe Species Reveal Cryptic Diversity Across China
Three newly described Inocybe species uncover hidden diversity in China's warm‑temperate regions.
The recent MycoKeys publication reports the discovery of three new Inocybe species that significantly expand the known diversity of the I. asterospora complex across warm‑temperate and subtropical China.1.net]
Led by Wen‑Jie Yu, Yu‑Peng Ge, Wan‑Yi Ren, Qin Na, Yan‑Ru Xu, Ya‑Ping Hu, and Yu‑Guang Fan, the study appears in volume 141 (pages 167–194) of MycoKeys, DOI 10.3897/mycokeys.141.210930. The authors conducted the first multi‑locus phylogenetic assessment of the I. asterospora group from these Chinese regions using ITS, LSU, and rpb2 gene sequences combined with detailed morphological observations.
Three novel species were formally named: I. taishanensis sp. nov., I. draconoculus sp. nov., and I. pretiosa sp. nov.; their description substantially increases recognized diversity within this lineage. Each species was differentiated based on subtle morphological traits and distinct genetic signatures revealed through multilocus sequencing.
Phylogenetically, the analysis recovered four geographically distinct subclades within the Asterospora group; however, interrelationships among them remained statistically unsupported. This result confirms that earlier Chinese records labeled “I. asterospora” actually represent a complex rather than a single taxon.
The research also clarified distribution boundaries: confirmed occurrences of true I. asterospora are confined to northern China, while reported specimens from North America and southern China lack molecular confirmation and likely reflect misidentifications.
These findings contribute ongoing efforts to clarify taxonomic boundaries and improve mycological classification systems globally. They echo a 2018 study by Wang et al. that identified four clades within the Asterospora section based on multi‑gene sequencing data from North American collections, underscoring the need for comprehensive phylogenetic work across continents.
