New Bolbitius Mushroom Species Discovered in Northeast China

Two new Bolbitius mushroom species were identified in northeast China, expanding fungal biodiversity knowledge.

A recent taxonomic investigation has added two previously unknown species of the genus Bolbitius (family Bolbitiaceae) to the fungal flora of northeast China. The research was carried out by Hong Cheng and Tolgor Bau and published in MycoKeys, detailing the morphology and genetic relationships of these fungi 1.net].

The first novel species, Bolbitius planoflavus, is characterised by its distinctly applanate, pale yellow pileus when mature and the presence of occasional 2‑spored basidia. The second addition, B. fuscopapillatus, shows a violet‑brown papillated umbo on its cap margin, which bears faint remnants of a veil. Both species are illustrated with detailed photographs showing their unique colouration and structural traits.

In addition to the two new species, the study reports Bolbitius bisporus as a new record for China. The authors used a combined multi‑locus dataset—ITS, nrLSU, and tef1‑α sequences—to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within the genus. Their analyses confirm that all three taxa form distinct lineages separate from previously described Bolbitius species elsewhere in Asia.

These findings highlight the rich but still poorly understood fungal diversity present in northeast China’s temperate forests. According to the mycologist who reviewed the work, discovering such species “can help us better understand the ecological roles they play as decomposers or symbionts with plants”. Indeed, many members of Bolbitiaceae are known to associate closely with tree roots, contributing to nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems.

For mushroom enthusiasts and foragers, these results underscore the importance of continued fieldwork in underexplored regions. While B. planoflavus and B. fuscopapillatus have not yet been evaluated for edibility or medicinal properties, their unique morphological traits may aid identification in future surveys. Moreover, the discovery of B. bisporus suggests that other unrecorded species could exist in similar habitats across eastern China.

Overall, Cheng and Bau’s research provides a clear taxonomic revision of Bolbitius in northeast China, adding two new species and one new record. The detailed morphological descriptions, colour photographs, and phylogenetic analyses give researchers a solid foundation for further ecological studies on this group of fungi. For those interested in mycology beyond commercial use, the work illustrates how meticulous field sampling combined with modern genetic tools can uncover hidden diversity in familiar landscapes.
