Seven New Bark‑Beetle Fungi Found in Shaanxi

Researchers identified seven new fungal species linked to bark beetles damaging pine trees in western China.

A team led by Minjie Chen has uncovered a suite of previously unknown fungi associated with bark beetles that infest Pinus armandii in Ankang City, Shaanxi Province, western China. The study was published in MycoKeys and reports the isolation of 230 ophiostomatalean strains collected from 46 gallery samples taken from infested trees 1.net].

Using multilocus phylogenetic analyses together with detailed morphological and physiological examinations, the researchers determined that these isolates represent 20 distinct species belonging to six genera. Among them were seven novel taxa, including Ceratocystiopsis rugosa sp. nov., Graphilbum prolificum sp. nov., G. ramosus sp. nov., Masuyamyces huoditangensis sp. nov., and three additional unnamed species described in the paper 1.net].

The discovery expands knowledge of the fungal communities that cooperate with bark beetles to damage pine forests. It also highlights how insect–fungal partnerships can influence tree health and potentially affect timber resources.

Expert commentary notes that although these fungi may act as symbionts or pathogens associated with bark‑beetle infestations, further studies are needed before concluding on their exact ecological impacts. In particular, the role of Ceratocystiopsis rugosa and related species in facilitating beetle success remains uncertain until more targeted investigations are conducted 1.net].

For mycology enthusiasts, this work demonstrates the ongoing importance of field sampling and molecular identification techniques in revealing hidden diversity. It also reminds scientists and resource managers alike that even non-edible fungi play critical roles in forest dynamics.
