Three New Mushroom Genera Described in Latest MycoKeys Issue
Recent MycoKeys releases reported two new Laccaria, three Pholiotina, and four Pseudoplagiostoma species.
Recent issues of MycoKeys announced the discovery of seven previously unknown mushroom species across three genera. In a study on edible mushrooms, researchers described two new Laccaria species—Laccaria daliensis and Laccaria violaceonana—from southwestern China based on morphology and multilocus phylogeny 1.net]. The work highlights the region’s potential for fungal exploration and could inform conservation efforts.
A second paper presented three novel Pholiotina taxa—P. constrictibasidiata, P. raribasidiata, and P. jilinensis—identified in Jilin Province and Xizang Autonomous Region using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference trees built from ITS, LSU, and tef1-α sequences 1.net]. These findings add to our knowledge of saprotrophic fungi that play crucial roles in decomposing organic matter.
The third publication introduced four new Pseudoplagiostoma isolates recovered from diseased leaves of Artocarpus hainanensis, Cinnamomum sp., Mallotus hookerianus, and Trachelospermum jasminoides in China. Phylogenetic analyses combining LSU, ITS, RPB2, TEF1-α, and TUB2 datasets confirmed these as distinct monophyletic lineages separate from previously described species 1.net]. Their characterization enhances taxonomy and ecological insights into this little-studied genus.
These studies collectively expand mushroom biodiversity records and underscore the importance of continued mycological research in Southeast Asia.
