East Asian Fungi Clarify Taxonomy of Litschauerella and Tubulicium

Researchers resolved placement of two corticioid genera with new DNA data.

A recent study published in MycoKeys volume 138 provided the first nuclear ribosomal ITS sequence data for Litschauerella abietis, the type species of the genus Litschauerella. The authors Yi‑Chung Lin and Che‑Chih Chen examined morphological traits on newly collected specimens from East Asia and existing herbarium material. Their analyses confirm that Litschauerella forms a monophyletic clade within Litschauerellaceae of the order Hymenochaetales, representing an early-diverging lineage in that order. This resolves a long-standing uncertainty caused by missing molecular data for the type species.1.net]

The same team studied Tubulicium, another corticioid genus traditionally placed in Trechisporales. By integrating ITS and 28S rDNA sequences with detailed morphology, they found that Tubulicium belongs to Hydnodontaceae of Trechisporales, sister to the genus Membranohymenium.1.net]

During their fieldwork Lin and Chen described three new fungal species: two belonging to Litschauerella (epithets not specified) and one additional record for Tubulicium. They also reported six new records overall—three new species plus three previously unrecorded occurrences—in East Asian forests. Phylogenetic analyses based on combined ITS and 28S datasets using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods provide robust support values for all major nodes, giving confidence to the revised taxonomy.1.net]

By adding DNA sequence data for these genera, the study enhances taxonomic clarity and may help refine identification tools used by mycology researchers and mushroom hunters.

In summary, Lin and Chen’s MycoKeys paper delivers critical molecular evidence that places two historically ambiguous corticioid genera into their correct orders, introduces three new East Asian species, and sets the stage for more reliable field identification tools for mushroom hunters and mycologists alike.
