Indian Study Unveils New Fungal Family in Pleosporales

Researchers described the first species of a newly established family and clarified relationships among several Pleosporales genera using combined genetic and morphological analyses.

A team led by Sruthi O. Paraparath published a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Rostriconidium that resulted in the description of a new species, Rostriconidium synnematicum, and the establishment of an entirely new fungal family, Sporidesmioidesaceae, within the order Pleosporales 1.net]. The work involved 15 co‑authors—Kunhiraman C. Rajeshkumar, Shadma Siddiqui, Dilna Chandran, Rungtiwa Phookamasak, Junfu Li, Nalin N. Wijayawardene, Rajnish Kumar Verma, Samantha C. Karunarathna, Sawoluck Tibpromma, Ajay Kumar Gautam, Rupam Kapoor, Nakarin Suwannarach, and Rajesh Jeewon—and was released in MycoKeys volume 138 (pages 1–33) with DOI 10.3897/mycokeys.138.184414 1.net].

The authors reappraised the taxonomy of Rostriconidium, noting that it had previously been confused with morphologically similar genera such as Neopodoconis, Pseudohelminthosporium, and Sporidesmioides. By integrating multilocus molecular data—including ITS, LSU, SSU, rpb2, and tef1-α sequences—with detailed morphological observations, they identified R. synnematicum as the sole synnematous species within the genus and positioned it as a sister lineage to other Rostriconidium species in the family Torulaceae. The study also proposed a new combination, Rostriconidium yunnanensis, under Rostriconidium itself 1.net].

Phylogenetic analyses were performed using both Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference methods, which together provided robust support for the newly erected Sporidesmioidesaceae family and clarified relationships among four otherwise cryptic Pleosporales lineages—Neopodoconis, Pseudohelminthosporium, Rostriconidium, and Sporidesmioides—that have historically been distinguished only by subtle phenotypic differences 1.net].

The expert commentary from mycologists highlights that this integrated approach resolves taxonomic ambiguities more accurately than previous studies that relied solely on phenotype or traditional taxonomy methods. It underscores how modern sequencing can untangle complex fungal lineages that are morphologically convergent, thereby refining our understanding of fungal diversity across India’s varied ecosystems 1.net].

In sum, the study not only adds a new species to the fungal catalogue but also establishes an entirely new family, providing a clearer framework for future research into Pleosporales evolution and ecology.
