New Genus Lasiolepiota Discovered in Southeast Asian Forests

Scientists identified a novel mushroom genus, Lasiolepiota, comprising two species from Laos and Thailand.

On October 30 2026 the open‑access journal MycoKeys published a study announcing the introduction of a new genus, Lasiolepiota, along with its two constituent species, L. oinochroa and L. thailandica, collected from forested areas in Laos and Thailand 1. The research team—Phongeun Sysouphanthong, Komsit Wisitrassameewong, Yuan S. Liu, Narumon Tangthirasunun, Else C. Vellinga, and Naritsada Thongklang—used both morphological examination and comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analyses to delineate the new taxon 1.

Morphologically, Lasiolepiota mushrooms are distinguished by a glabrous patch at the center of the pileus; basidiomata range from small to large and are covered with a thick layer of fibrous felt or woolly floccules; lamellae are free and white; an annulus is fragile. Stipes and piles share a complex hyphal structure composed of irregular, branched hyphae. Spores are hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid–amygdaliform; cheilocystidia are clavate to fusiform; pleurocystidia are absent.

The authors combined gene sequences from ITS, LSU, rpb2, and tef1‑α loci for their phylogenetic analysis, confirming that Lasiolepiota falls within the family Agaricaceae sensu stricto and is distinctly separate from other genera such as Lactarius or Russula. The resulting tree placed both species firmly within this newly erected genus, thereby justifying its formal recognition (see Fig. 3 in the publication) 1.

This discovery expands our understanding of fungal diversity across Southeast Asia—a region previously underrepresented in global taxonomic surveys. It also provides fresh diagnostic characters that may aid field identification where similar-looking agarics coexist with economically important taxa like the common button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) 1.

The molecular confirmation underscores how modern phylogenetics can resolve long‑standing ambiguities in mushroom taxonomy. Earlier revisions within Agaricaceae relied heavily on morphology alone; integrating multiple gene markers yields robust phylogenies capable of distinguishing even subtle lineages. Consequently, Lasiolepiota’s recognition may prompt reevaluation of other ambiguous genera in the family, potentially leading to further taxonomic refinements.

In summary, the formal description of Lasiolepiota enriches the fungal catalog of Southeast Asia, offers new diagnostic features for mycologists, and exemplifies the power of combined morphological and genetic approaches in uncovering hidden biodiversity. The study invites additional field surveys across neighboring regions to assess the genus’s full distribution and ecological impact.
