Armillaria Fungi Cover Over Three Square Miles in Eastern Oregon

A massive Armillaria fungus spanning over three square miles was documented in eastern Oregon.

In 2015 researchers observed an enormous fungal organism called Armillaria living in eastern Oregon. It covered more than three square miles and weighed several thousand tons.1

Researchers note that its exact species and age remain unknown. Such large fungus organisms play crucial roles in forest ecosystems by forming mycorrhizal relationships with trees, aiding nutrient uptake and promoting overall ecosystem health. However, their vast size can also lead to competition for resources and potential negative impacts on younger or less competitive plants. Researchers continue to study these elusive fungi to better understand their ecological significance and management implications.

A manual titled "Mushroom Cultivation Manual for the Small Mushroom Entrepreneur" covers various aspects of mushroom cultivation. This volume should please both academic and general readers alike, and will probably realize its aim of finding a home in travelers' backpacks.2
